7  Epoch 7: Lightning Upgrade

NoteCompleted Early

This epoch was originally planned as the brushless conversion, but we went brushless in Epoch 2—and chose the premium Roverin M30 G2 FOC sensored system for the best possible toddler-appropriate control.

What we got in Epoch 2 instead:

  • Roverin M30 G2 FOC Sensored Brushless ESC & Motor
  • 4M-55 CNC Aluminum Transmission with 40.3:1 underdrive gears (59% slower than stock)
  • FOC (Field Oriented Control) for precise low-speed motor control
  • Sensored motor for zero-jitter startup
  • 200% adjustable drag brake for controlled descents
  • IP67 waterproof (submersible 1m for 30 minutes)
  • Bluetooth app tuning via INJORA Link

The Roverin is the premium option, but the ~$45 difference over the MBL32 G2 buys meaningfully better toddler-appropriate behavior: smoother starts, more controlled stops, and bulletproof waterproofing.

7.1 Original Plan (For Reference)

The original plan was to run brushed through Epochs 1-6, then upgrade to brushless here. Common options were:

Table 7.1: Original Epoch 7 options
Item Part Number Source Est. Cost Notes
Traxxas Brushless System #6250 Traxxas $120 Plug-and-play; sensorless
Furitek Stinger 118 Furitek Furitek $99-110 Sensored; excellent crawl control
Injora Roverin FOC Injora Injora $80-100 Sensored; FOC control

7.2 Why Early Brushless Made Sense

  1. Best-in-class control: The Roverin M30 G2 with FOC sensored control provides the smoothest possible low-speed crawling—exactly what a 3-year-old learning throttle control needs.

  2. Eliminated future upgrade: This epoch would have been $80-120. Going brushless early eliminates the need entirely.

  3. 200% drag brake: The Roverin’s adjustable drag brake provides twice the braking power of standard systems—critical for controlled descents when a toddler drives off furniture.

  4. IP67 waterproofing: Can be submerged 1 meter for 30 minutes. Critical for Michigan winters and unpredictable toddler situations.

  5. 40.3:1 underdrive gearing: The 4M-55 transmission provides 59% slower speed than stock, maximizing crawl control. May eliminate the need for additional low-range gears in Epoch 5.
