8  Radio & Electronics Deep Dive

8.1 Why You Need New Electronics for the Winch

The stock TRX-4M uses a 2-in-1 ESC/Receiver combo—a single unit that handles both functions. It only has 2 channels (steering + throttle) and can only pair with Traxxas TQ remotes. There are no auxiliary outputs for accessories.

The Problem: Stock electronics = 2 channels only. Winch needs channel 3.

To run the winch, you need:

  • A receiver with at least 3 channels
  • A transmitter with a knob/switch for channel 3
  • A standalone ESC (separate from the receiver)

8.2 The Injora MB100-R80 + T6 Combo ($58)

This is the cleanest solution—replaces your entire electronics stack.

8.2.1 MB100-R80 ESC

DEO: Dynamic Electronic Overload provides smooth power delivery instead of on/off throttle response.

  • IP67 waterproof
  • DEO (Dynamic Electronic Overload) for smooth power
  • Compatible with 2-3S LiPo
  • Works with brushed motors (030/050/130/180/370)
  • Built-in drag brake

8.2.2 T6 Transmitter + T6DC Receiver

  • 6 channels total
  • 2.4GHz FHSS, 67-channel frequency hopping
  • 400-500m range
  • Speed limiting—dial down max throttle for Alasdair
  • Fully programmable endpoints, trim, reverse

8.2.3 Programming the T6

Speed Limiting: This is the killer feature for letting a 3-year-old drive. Dial back max throttle to 50% and he can’t crash as hard.

  1. Hold wheel backward + trigger backward to maximum
  2. Power on transmitter
  3. Release wheel and trigger
  4. Press 3rd channel button—indicator flashes (programming mode)
  5. Adjust settings, then press 3rd channel button to confirm

8.3 Alternative Radio Options

Table 8.1: Radio system comparison
Radio System Channels Price Best For
Injora T6M + T4DCM 6 $45-55 Compact receiver; need separate ESC
Flysky GT5 + BS6 6 $80-100 Proven reliability; larger transmitter
MEUS Racing ME-8A 8 $60-80 Most channels; TRX4M-specific
Furitek MicroPython RXF 4 $70-90 Integrated ESC+receiver; most compact
